1930年代にグラムシは、西洋社会が極めて宗教的であると認識し、プロレタリア革命を達成する唯一の方法は、西洋の有権者である大衆のキリスト教とキリスト教に由来する道徳体系への信仰を打ち砕くことだと考えていました。彼は、宗教と文化をピラミッドの土台と位置付けたのです。
